The Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce successfully launched a new program for its membership called “Living Well in Glastonbury©” in January. The purpose of the initiative is to inspire Chamber members to incorporate more health and fitness into their day-to-day lives so that they can enjoy all of the benefits offered by a wellness-oriented lifestyle. The Chamber will also strive to educate Chamber business owners about the benefits of promoting a healthy and fit workforce which can translate into lower health care costs and a more energetic, positive and dynamic atmosphere in the workplace.
The Chamber has adopted a concept of wellness which consists of three categories: “eating well” (nutrition), “moving well” (exercise) and “thinking well” (mental well-being and behavior modification). The centerpiece of this initiative will be a friendly team competition in which teams of five members each will be organized. A point system has been created which awards participants for exercising, eating a nutritious diet and educating themselves on wellness topics by attending seminars organized by the Chamber. The point system and competition-oriented format have been adopted in order to motivate Chamber members to fully participate in this initiative. The team factor is also important in this regard since participants will have team members who will be counting on their daily efforts at living a healthy lifestyle. Each competition will last for six weeks; there will be four competitions per year.
Another component of the Living Well in Glastonbury© program will be devoted to educating Chamber members about the benefits of promoting a healthy and fit workforce. Health education seminars will be held at the Riverfront Community Center from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m..
We are confident that this will be a particularly successful initiative with a great deal of involvement from our membership. Not only is health and wellness currently an important topic for U.S. society in general, but focusing on this issue in the workplace translates into enhanced productivity, reduced absenteeism and lower health costs for local businesses.
